It’s just one-hour drive away from Medan. It’s located at the town of Sibolangit, Deli Serdang regency.
Yet I’ve never heard of The Hill until last December. Apparently it’s a new resort hotel that began to gain popularity among Medanese as an alternative mini-getaway to the twin classics of Lake Toba and Berastagi Highland.
The Hill is strategically located. Not only that it’s just halfway towards Berastagi, but around this area you can also find an off-the-beaten attraction called Two-Color Sibolangit Waterfalls.
I’ve never been to the falls myself, but from what I’ve heard it’s a fruitful 3-hour hike that leads you to a secret bathing place where warm white falls and cold crystal-blue falls meet. So if you have an extra day, this will make an interesting stop.
Nonetheless, if you’re heading straight towards Berastagi, The Hill itself is a pretty, serene resort worth of a short stopover.
The resort also showcases many interesting animals, both outdoor and caged. This is surely a hit among children, but even for adults, just sitting calmly on the gazebo watching swans can conjure sparks of romance.
They also have a pair of beautiful, ass-kicking cassowaries (only one is shown below).
And a few other dozen unique birds (not to mention lots of talking parrots), including this non-flying one.
And this little hornbill chillaxing at branches.
And if birds ain’t your thing, this little koala-like mammal is irresistibly adorable.
Or these rare slanted-eye, albino kangaroos!
Or this dangling baby ape who’s looking at me hopefully for a banana.
It was just a short, relaxing afternoon walk; but nonetheless a nice little gem during my trip back home last year.
